Newly Published! PEER-HOMEcare: A Feasibility Study Protocol
We are excited to share our newly published study protocol, Pedagogy and Enriched Environment for Rehabilitation in the HOME after stroke (PEER-HOMEcare): Study protocol for a single-group feasibility study, published in Translational Stroke Research.
Recovery after stroke largely takes place at home, yet many rehabilitation programs do not fully utilize the opportunities that the home environment offers. The PEER-HOMEcare project aims to address this gap by exploring a novel approach that combines pedagogical principles with enriched environments to support upper-limb recovery after stroke.
Rather than focusing solely on prescribed exercises, PEER-HOMEcare encourages individuals to engage with meaningful activities in their everyday surroundings. The intervention is designed to promote exploration, problem-solving, and active participation, helping stroke survivors increase the use of their affected arm in daily life.
This feasibility study will evaluate the acceptability, practicality, and implementation of the intervention, providing valuable insights for the development of future home-based rehabilitation programs. The findings will help determine whether a larger clinical trial is warranted and contribute to advancing person-centered rehabilitation practices.
The study was developed by an international multidisciplinary team including Luca Oppici, Ann Marie Hestetun-Mandrup, Arve Opheim, Katharina S. Sunnerhagen, Lena Rafsten, Guna Bērziņa, Marianne Løvstad, Helle P. Øra, Matheus M. Pacheco, James R. Rudd, and colleagues. Together, the team seeks to transform how rehabilitation is delivered after stroke by making the home a more active and supportive environment for recovery.
We look forward to sharing updates as the PEER-HOMEcare study progresses.
