Taking charge of your recovery

Recovery doesn’t end with PEER-HOMEcare...it continues in your everyday life, where small changes can make a lasting difference.

Taking charge

Life beyond PEER-HOMEcare

Recovery continues in your everyday life, long after visits from your therapist end. The small changes you make in your routines, habits, and confidence at home are what help build lasting independence.

This section is about helping you take what you learn during the program and apply it in a way that works for your life. There is no “right way” to recover, instead, it is about finding practical strategies that fit your home, your goals, and your daily routines.

Over time, these small steps can help you feel more confident managing everyday activities and taking control of your own recovery journey.

Practice through everyday activities

Research shows that recovery is supported through repeated use of the affected arm. Your therapist will help you identify opportunities throughout the day to practise movements and skills that are important to you. These activities should be meaningful and relevant to your life.

Professor James Rudd, PEER-HOMEcare project lead explains.

Using your affected arm can be challenging

After a stroke, it is natural to rely more on your stronger arm. Our brains and bodies are designed to find the easiest and most efficient way to complete a task.

Project team member and Occupational Therapist, Linda Sørensen explains the importance of avoiding compensation and finding ways for the affected arm to improve function.

Using the daily diary

Your daily diary is a simple way to track your activities, monitor your arm use, and recognise the progress you are making throughout the program.

Project team member and Physiotherapist, Ann Marie Hestetun Mandrup shows you how to best capture your activities.

Progress happens in small moments

Recovery is not only about therapy sessions. It happens in the small moments throughout the day when you choose to use your affected arm, practise a strategy, or try something that is meaningful to you.

Learn how to recognise these opportunities and build them into your daily life, so that recovery becomes part of what you already do.
